Fatal Vision Drunk Goggles

Fatal Vision Drunk Goggles are a hands-on awareness building tool that allows people to experience with a sober mind what it is like to be under the influence of alcohol. Participants experience what it feels like to have their balance, vision, reaction time, and judgment impaired by alcohol while not being impaired by alcohol.

Fatal vision drunk goggles mimic being intoxicated and cause your brain to overcompensate for what your eyes are seeing. You can do a lot of fun activities while wearing the goggles such as attempting to walk in a straight line, trying to put a key in a door lock, maintaining your balance while standing on one leg, and tossing and catching a ball.

Fatal vision drunk goggle activities help drive home the message how being impaired by alcohol or other substances affects our coordination, reflexes, and reaction time; and prove how dangerous being under the influence of a substance can be, not only to ourselves, but also to others.

Fatal Vision Drunk Goggles come in different impairment levels from .07 to .25+ and are available in both daytime and nighttime options.

Details

  • Target Audience: Recommended grade use for these goggles is 6th grade or older, however consideration should be taken for the maturity of your targeted audience as activities may be seen as funny by the audience and distract from the intended message.
  • Cost: No charge.

Community opportunities to assist and empower our community members.

Substance Abuse Task Force

The Substance Abuse task force is a group of diverse community members from different sectors that work together to address Substance Abuse by youth in Topeka, Shawnee County Area. Created in 2009, the group is continually tracking consumption rates and the factors that affect in a positive or negative way the use and abuse of substances. While tracking county data, we understand the trends in youth consumption of alcohol and other drugs and design strategies to help decrease it and create a healthier lifestyle for youth. The Substance Abuse Task Force is part of the Shawnee County Community Health Improvement Plan group.

Mission and Goals

The Shawnee County Substance Abuse Task Force is committed to making a reduction in substance use a priority throughout the County. The Task Force's goals include:

  • To educate the public about the incidence and impact of early substance use by youth.
  • To energize the public to address substance use within their families, schools and multiple sectors throughout the county.
  • To engage key leaders and policy makers about the impact of substance use on the health and wellbeing of the county related to the impact of substance use.

When Does the Substance Abuse Tas Force Meet?

The group as a whole and the task teams (Events and Public Engagement, Data and Evaluation and Communication/Advocacy) meet often throughout the year but dates are not pre-defined as the group adapt at the work on hand.

The Kansas Coalition on Problem Gambling (KCPG)

The Kansas Coalition on Problem Gambling (KCPG) is a statewide organization whose mission is to reduce the onset and progression of problem gambling. The KCPG received its Articles of Incorporation on March 17, 1998 and is an Affiliate Member of the National Council on Problem Gambling.

What is the mission of KCPG?

The mission of the Kansas Coalition on Problem Gambling is to reduce the onset and progression of problem gambling.

What is the purpose of KCPG?

The Coalition works to increase public awareness of pathological gambling, ensure the widespread availability of treatment for problem gamblers and their families, and encourage research and programs for prevention and education. The Coalition itself is neither for nor against gambling in Kansas; it instead focuses on prevention and treatment for the problem gambler and others impacted by problem gambling.

What is the membership of KCPG?

The membership includes representatives from communities, community coalition substance abuse treatment providers, Kansas Certified Gambling Counselors, mental health providers, advocates, policy makers, regents’ schools and consumers. This varied membership assures representation of communities across the state of Kansas.

How do I get more information about or contact to join KCPG?

The Kansas Prevention Collaborative (KPC)

KDADS (Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services) recognized the opportunity to expand prevention efforts to be inclusive of substance use prevention, mental health promotion, suicide prevention, and problem gambling prevention to enhance the behavioral health of Kansas communities.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) defines behavioral health as a state of emotional/mental being and/or choices and actions that affect health and wellness. Individuals engage in behavior and make choices that affect their wellness, such as whether or not to use alcohol.

Communities can also influence choices and actions that affect wellness, such as imposing and enforcing laws that restrict youth accessing alcohol. Behavioral health, then, can also be used to describe the service systems surrounding the promotion of mental health, the prevention and treatment of substance use, problem gambling, and mental health disorders, and the prevention of suicide.

Data at both the state and national level underscore that now is the time to more comprehensively address prevention efforts across the spectrum of behavioral health.

What is KPC and what are its goals?

The Kansas Prevention Collaborative (KPC) was created in an effort to integrate and innovate behavioral health prevention efforts. The KCP has two primary goals:

  • To integrate behavioral health prevention efforts (substance use disorders, suicide prevention, mental health promotion, problem gambling education and awareness)
  • Allocate greater resources to local level, community-driven prevention efforts.

All services provided by the Collaborative partners are designed to support capacity development, increase engagement and involvement and expand opportunities in terms of fiscal and other resources to communities across the state.
